From the very minute Trump announced his brilliant idea for Gaza, it felt to me like a major charletan debacle in the making. I knew there was no way the Arab world was going to agree to a plan to depopulate Arabs from Arab lands by a foreign power. That was not going to be accepted.
And in the past weeks, we’ve seen encouraging signs that no, Arabs are not accepting an ethnic cleansing and resettlement. And, suddenly, all talk of ‘normalization‘ ceased, and a Palestinian state is being demanded as a precondition for peace. They are even offering financial assistance for the reconstruction of Gaza.
I find all of this very encouraging. The world is changing, and not entirely for the worse (though, as Americans, it’s hard to find solace these days, I know).
